Fondant Owl Cake Toppers by Cupcake Stylist

Peyton was celebrating his 1st birthday, and his owl themed cake was easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. Peyton's Mom wanted to celebrate his birthday with a cake based on Erin Bradley's owl illustrations.

2. Peyton's Mom provided me with a sketch of the cake she designed based on Erin Bradley's illustrations.

3. Cupcake Stylist made the fondant owl cake decorations to make Peyton's owl cake a reality!

Happy 1st Birthday Peyton!

Happy Birthday Cupcake Stylist!

Yes, today is the Cupcake Stylist's first birthday!  It is hard to believe that a year has gone by -- much of it has been a whirlwind, but I have to admit, I have LOVED every minute of it!

I am often asked how I got started making cake and cupcake toppers. To those of you who know the story, you can check out for a bit. To those who are curious, I WAS a fine artist - painting watercolor portraits of life (people, places, pets and favorite things!), and had just been published as an illustrator for a children's book.  And then a simple home accident changed my direction.  You see, one day I was on my hands and knees, cleaning my pantry floor, then when I went to push off with my hands to stand up,my hand slipped on the wet floor and jammed into something in the pantry.  I ended up injurying my extensor hood and had to have surgery to repair my extensor hood and transfer a tendon.  Since the surgery, I have not been able to hold a paintbrush, so I needed to find another creative outlet.  I had taken cake decorating classes the year before, loved it, and thought I might do that.  Unfortunately, not only can I not hold a paintbrush, I can't hold a bag filled with icing, so cake decorating was out too!  BUT then I remembered fondant...that sweet little playdoh like stuff that you can knead, squeeze, roll and shape into whatever you can imagine!  It was the perfect fit.  Working with fondant is like hand therapy -- the constant movement exercises my hand and allows me to create fun little figures that help you celebrate the good things in life!

I have had the privilege of participating in many celebrations over the past year, and I thank each and every one of you for allowing me to share in the special celebrations of your life!

I don't know about you, but one of my pet peeves is that so many businesses these days seem to offer incredible deals to first time customers, while neglecting their loyal customers.  Although I appreciate each and every one of you, I would like to extend a SPECIAL thank you to those of you who helped me get started and ordered from Cupcake Stylist between March 21st 2011 and March 20th 2012.  If you ordered from the  Cupcake Stylist between March 21st 2011 and March 20th 2012, I would like to offer you a one time 20% discount off your next order.   The discount will apply to the price of the toppers only.  To obtain your 20% discount, please convo me before placing your order  and let me know that you would like to redeem your 1st year loyalty coupon.  I will provide you with a coupon code that can be entered on your order, and you will receive 20% off the price AND toppers made with love and care to celebrate your special event!

Thank you again -- I consider it an honor to participate in your special celebrations of life!

INTRODUCING Fondant Circus and Vintage Circus Themed Cake and Cupcake Toppers

It is funny how the word "Circus" reminds me of being a kid, attending my first Ringling Bros & Barnum and Baily circus.  There was a man sitting nearby and he kept yelling, "Join the circus and see the world!"  Another memory the world circus brings is of watching the old Marx brothers movie, "At the Circus".  I couldn't tell you a thing about the movie, but I could sing you the song, "Lydia Oh Lydia".  You see, I have a sister named Lydia and she heard that song a lot!!!!  = )

Other circus related memories are more recent and have to do with fondant = )

You see, circus and vintage themed cake and cupcake decorations are quite popular for celebrating Birthday's Baby Showers, and even Weddings, and I've had several requests to help make your circus themed visions a reality in fondant.

As a result, I am introducing fondant circus and vintage circus themed cake and cupcake topper sets in my Cupcake Stylist shop on Etsy.

The Circus set includes: 4 - 2" tall 3D circus animals, a name plaque and a number flag.  The set was made in primary colors (red, yellow & blue), but can be made in any three color combination that you choose. And, if you need larger sizes, that can certainly be arranged as a custom order.

The Vintage Circus set includes: 5 - 2" tall circus animals, 1 - 4" tall circus animal, 2 - 2" tall circus tents, and 1 2" tall popcorn.  The vintage set was made using a dulled red, teal and white color combination, but like the above circus set, can be made in any 4 color combination that you choose.  Also, if you prefer larger sizes, or a different combination of items, that can be arranged as a custom order.

Well, I've got more toppers to make, so I'd better get back to it, but if I can help you make your fondant dreams a reality, please contact me at CupcakeStylist@aol.com, or via my Cupcake Stylist shop on Etsy.

Have a blessed day!

Fondant Art Cake and Cupcake Decorations

I feel a little like a broken record when I say I LOVE a challenge!

Tiffani, has challenged me on three occasions now, to create fondant decorations for an "art" themed birthday cake and cupcakes for her daughter, a "New York Yankee" themed cake, and a "safari" cake.

When working to create your vision in fondant, it helps me to know...
  • the type of event you are planning
  • whether you will be serving a cake, cupcakes, both, or some other type of dessert
  • the cake dimensions (shape, number of tiers, height and width/diameter of each tier)
  • colors to be used
  • if you have an invitation that you would like the decorations to match or complement
For Tiffani's art cake, she provided me with her plan to order a 2-tier, round cake, with a 6" diameter top tier (height TBD) and 10 or 12" diameter bottom tier (8" high), and 24 cupcakes. Tiffani suggested brushes, palettes and an easel -- she also provided me with her daughter's name and age to be celebrated, and turned me loose.

I came up with the following sketch
Tiffani approved the sketch and work began.  Here are the finished art cake decorations...

I didn't photograph the paint drips, but they were created and wrapped immediately to keep them soft and pliable. I didn't want them to dry and crack, so you will just have to use your imagination = )

In case your missed the New York Yankee themed fondant cake decorations that Tiffani ordered previously, here they are...

If you have a vision in fondant that you would like realized, please check out the Cupcake Stylist shop on Etsy, or contact me at CupcakeStylist@aol.com .  I would be happy to help!

Happy Styling!
